Affiliate marketing is the act of promoting products or services on a website in exchange for a commission. This type of marketing is set up in a little bit of a different way then typical e-commerce stores.

A typical e-commerce store can be considered affiliate marketing as well, in that it provides its own products or services which it makes money off of. However, typically affiliate marketing is the one who acts as an agent for the e-commerce organization making sales.

Doing this helps drive the traffic to an affiliate marketing website in order for that marketer to make money.

In order to be a part of an affiliate marketing program usually an application needs to be filled out. Then, the marketer will provide some type of financial information, which usually will include a social security number and/or bank account number. Now, you know that you are risking everything when you give you that kind of personal information on line.

Commission Junction lists a large number of legitimate companies looking for webmasters to market their products. Usually people will sign up to more than one of the affiliate programs listed at Commission Junction, yet approval to be a part of each specific affiliate program is done individually.

Google.com offers a program called Google AdSense. This is a program in which site owners will place ad codes on the pages of their site. Then, when relevant content is presented on those pages ads automatically are generated to the pages of those sites. Google also has a program which allows people to put a search engine on the pages of their site. Affiliate marketers usually make a small profit when people click on a Google ad or when they search on the Google site.
